Lurking unknowingly in our homes are many potential harmful and hidden dangers that adversely affect the quality of the air we breathe. Since Canadians, especially in Calgary, spend 90% of their time indoors we owe it to ourselves to learn of these potential dangers and correct them. Cleaning and testing the air is not difficult or expensive it is simply a matter of being aware.
Individuals who spend the most amount of time inside their home are the most at risk. In our society that often consists of stay-home parents and their young children, and the elderly. Although some people seem to be more susceptible to the effects of poor air quality, in that they present with physical effects, everyone is at risk. The effects may show up immediately with respiratory challenges, headaches or down the road in the form of more sever health challenges - possibly cancer.
There are many signs that you may have an air quality issue in your home. They include:
- Unusual and noticeable odors,
- Stale or stuffy air,
- Noticeable lack of air movement,
- Dirty or faulty central heating or air conditioning equipment,
- Damaged flue pipes or chimneys,
- Excessive humidity,
- Presence of molds and mildew,
- Feeling noticeably healthier outside, or
- Nagging flu like symptoms, persistent headaches or nausea.
The next option will provide a more thorough analysis of your home environment. There are many sophisticated machines which can be used to accurately assess toxins and allergens in your environment. Hire a professional using these devices to clearly identify source issues. This option may be a little pricier but the peace mind is well worth the investment.
We often ignore air quality concerns because we can't see it directly. When an issue isn't staring us clearly in the face it is easy to push it aside and not give it the attention it deserves. Not until there is a real actual problem, like a physical ailment, do we find the time to pay attention. I encourage you not to ignore this. The efforts do not cost mush money and the solutions are easy to implement. All it takes is a little time and effort on your part to make it a priority.
Better health through the reduction of toxins. To good health.
